Teach Like a Champion

Teach like a Champion: Technique 1
No Opt Out
I love the No Opt Out technique Doug Lemov shares in his book, Teach Like a Champion.  The key idea is this; when a student is unable or unwilling to answer a question move on to someone else. Once the student has heard the correct answer repeat the question and have the student give the answer.  Lemov believes that using this technique will allow the reluctant students to recognize that “I don’t know” is the Rosetta Stone of work avoidance.
There are four formats of the No Opt Out strategy:
1.       You provide the answer; the student repeats the answer.
2.       Another student provides the answer; the initial student repeats the answer.
3.       You provide a hint: the student uses it to find and answer.
4.       Another student provides a hint; the initial student uses it to find an answer.
One final thought by Lemov, “No matter what balance you strike, students in your classroom should come to expect that when they can’t answer or when they answer incorrectly, there is a strong likelihood that they will conclude their interaction by demonstrating their responsibility and ability to identify the right answer.”

Math In Focus

Thanks to the first grade team, I had the opportunity to attend another great workshop given by Anni Stipek.  If you remember she is the one who came to West Lafayette over the summer and presented information about the Singapore Math approach.  Again, Anni did a great job and I left feeling refreshed and ready to dive back into math :)  Below are two websites she has posted on her blog.  The first is a report by Dan Rather on Singapore and education.  The second is what is called a "Livebinder".  You can click on the tabs and it will take you to different places on the web.

During Wellman's reading block kids get to read
fom a NOOK!

Cox's class celebrates good behavior with a sports party.
I wonder who thought of THAT idea!

Visiting classrooms this week has been an awesome experience for me.  The time, energy and love for what you do every day is very obvious.  I am so proud to be member of this great staff!

A note from Andrea:)

Fellow staff,

I know that right now many of us feel a bit overwhelmed as another school year is underway…Though our free time is precious, I can’t resist sharing something that I feel is worth a few hours of our time…

To me, sleep is priceless and I spent what could have been precious hours of shut-eye last night watching “Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero” on the Discovery channel. I think if you have a few hours or are in need of renewing your outlook on life, you should watch it too.

At the beginning of this week, I threw up my arms and shed some tears for what I felt was my loss of family time and, to a certain extent, my freedom…how ridiculous of me to think that I’d lost anything…

p.s. I think you all are amazing teachers! Our children are SO lucky! J
